WESTWORKS BUILDING - 2019
Concrete Audio System
Date: 2019
Location: Westworks Building, White City, London
Typology: Lobby of an office building
Client: Stanhope PLC
Materiality: Concrete, steel, aggregate, drivers
Situated within the Westworks building in White City, London, the speakers provide an audio system for Westworks’ entrance and its congregational space. The work consists of four free standing concrete speakers which coalesce to bring sculptural forms to audio speaker design.
The forms are clustered, facing outwards, allowing sound to be projected in multiple directions. This arrangement facilitates the perception of sound by individuals situated throughout the large lobby space, simultaneously reducing the fragmented sounds of a high traffic environment.
The work is cast concrete, materially informed by London’s Brutalist buildings. Forms reflect and ruminate on these familiar environments, considered through design and manufacture, where original construction techniques have been observed.
